Brexit transitory rules ending in 9 days – New residence permits
British citizens seeking to claim residence in Portugal must register before the 31st of December 2020 at their local Municipality.
Registration is vital to access a streamlined process of applying for a residence permit. Under a new system, the Portuguese Authorities will replace the old registration papers.
After such replacement is requested, a document containing a QR Code will be issued. The Portuguese authorities can then validate this document when resident individuals need to prove their residence status in Portugal.
Individuals failing to register before the end of 2020 will have to comply with what is expected to be a cumbersome process. In this scenario, those wishing to claim residency must produce and file evidence of past residence in Portugal, established before the 31st of December 2020.
